Happy Anniversary!

Wendy Solberg - Monday, October 26, 2009

Wow, last week was wonderful.  We turned one-year old!  Looking back, this has been a tremendous year for all of us.  We have met an amazing group of knitters, crocheters, weavers, and general lovers of yarn...  I believe we have also built a home to gather and mix these minds together surrounded by colorful yarns (and a few cats)!

Our anniversary party was on Friday, 10/16 - and we had a great time.  We have tons of food, laughter, and later in the evening we had wine and champagne!  Thanks to all of you who joined us on our anniversary day!   Here are a few pictures of the festivities!

Another anniversary celebration item was to share "The Tinsmith's Wife" colorway from String Theory.  The yarn is her Caper Sock (with just a touch of cashmere).  This yarn is perfect for shawls as well as socks.  We kitted them up with a commemorative mug - and a nifty tape measure.  We do have a limited edition of all!  My the yarn comes up beautifully - Dad made Mom and I each a shawl, and wow!

It is also neat as so many folks are still discovering us for the first time.  This weekend we had a lot of wonderful folks who attended a prayer shawl retreat here in the Hill Country.  Plus a knitting group from Llano came down and spent the afternoon with us.  This kind of company is awesome as everyone brings their current project(s) - and it is like a great big show and tell!  Also, it is a great way to cross pollinate ideas on yarns, patterns, etc.  One of the prayer shawl group shared a beautiful and neat thought - that you are often what you knit.  Last night they spread out their goodies - and shared that you purchase and knit what you value, who you are, etc.  When she said it - it was much deeper than I am making it, but I hope you get the general glimmer of this amazing concept.

Now, what else have I been doing since I missed a week with my blog?  Well - I had a great trip to Scottsdale, Arizona this past week.  It was just gorgeous!  The weather was in the low 60s - and the highs were in the high 70s.  Wow!  The trip was work related - but as soon as the free time bell rang, I was on my patio just knitting away!  It was extremely peaceful to sit, listen to the new Dan Brown book, knit, and watch the Cactus Wrens hopping around....  I did finish my Month 10 Scarf to Throw - and how awesome that there was a flower in the desert that matched!

Guess I better get myself to knitting on my Adult Surprise Jacket.  I think this is not going to be a fast project - but is a treat to have some "simple" knitting (after the math of setting it up - it is simple).  Also, next weekend we are knitting a Cat Bordhi Enchanted Forest Christmas Stocking that is felted - and I haven't started yet - ruhoh (said in my best Scooby Doo voice)....

Before I close - one more item...  Thanks again to each of you who have supported us in our first year; we do appreciate it and are looking forward to our second year!

Post Crawl Thanks

Wow - it has been a tremendous week!  So many wonderful people met and a generally happy weekend!

I was invited by the Texas Goat and Sheep Raisers Auxiliary to speak with them about our first year and share a bit about what folks are knitting with sheep and goat fibers on Monday (10/5).  What a tremendous group of ladies - many of whom are part of families who have been ranching in this area for four generations.  The meeting was held in a gorgeous home right off Highway 87 on the way to Fredericksburg - and one of the ladies was born in this home in 1922 and told a tremendous story of her family.

In the middle part of the week I did some "real" work and was counting the days to the Best Little Yarn Crawl in Texas!  Thursday we decorated for Fall and got the shop ready.   Laurel (as you will see below) was a big help in decorating...  I think we did a pretty fine job with a little help from Mother Nature; we had a nice cool (and a bit damp) weekend!

Laurel being a great big help and looking seasonal at the same time!

The shop early morning - doesn't it look cozy?!

The actual Yarn Crawl is still a bit of a blur - we had approximately 238 passport holders visit our shop over the past four days, plus we had several brave customers who visited who were not participating in the Yarn Crawl.  Thanks to everyone for a great weekend.   Everyone was extremely patient has we worked to find patterns, yarn, and check everyone out in time to send them out to the next shop.  The one sad thing is that I didn't get to visit with many as it was just so busy.  I do hope that everyone enjoyed their visit and are already looking forward to next year - if not a quick visit to Comfort in the near future!  Again, a special thanks to Susan at Yarnorama in Paige who did a tremendous job organizing all of us.  AND if you didn't get to Paige during the Crawl - be sure to visit!  You will not be disappointed!  The drawings for the overall prizes will be done on Wednesday night!

However, before we leave tonight - we have done the drawings for our in-shop drawings (drum roll please)!

$25 Tinsmith's Wife Gift Card - Kara Sneed
Schaefer Sock Pack - Mickey Majors
HIya Hiya Sock Set - Jennifer Loving
Laura Bryant Book - CJ Wright

Congratulations to all!  We will reach out to each of our winners to let them know of their win and coordinate delivery of their prizes!

We had some special volunteers this weekend who I would also like to thank.   Karen, Cyndee, and Darcy were kind enough to spare several days and hours to help us out!   I did get a snap of Karen and Darcy during a quiet moment as they were getting some knitting done.  The cool thing is that both of these ladies knit similar projects - and on this day were knitting with the same color of Noro Kuryeon!

Lastly - as this segment has already gotten a tad long - is just to celebrate my family.  Unfortunately I didn't get a picture of Mom and Dad this weekend - they were moving like a blur.  I still swear I could not do anything without them.  I am blessed every single day for these amazing people.  Another trooper is my husband, Scott,  who did get his picture taken bowing to the awesomeness of Noro.  Noro really wanted to be the one to stamp passports - but he kept getting blue ink on his white fur.  Nana even helped this weekend - she made sandwiches for the team!

Well - we close in about 10 minutes - and I am off and will begin to dream of our one -year annivesary celebration that kicks off this Friday (10/16) at 10 am.   Hope to see you then!

Yarn Crawl Countdown!!

Wendy Solberg - Sunday, October 04, 2009

Ge-wilickers!  It is almost time for The Best Little Yarn Crawl in Texas...  In fact, the countdown is now four days!  As this our first Yarn Crawl, we are hopeful to make a great impression and have smooth flow for our visitors.  I must admit, thinking of a bus of knitters pulling up out front is a bit daunting...but fun!   We are going to keep the momentum going into the next weekend with our one-year anniversary, and I am much more prepared for this one.  I am giddy about our anniversary project - and I do hope everyone will snap them up!  Still in shock that it has already been one whole year....

In addition to planning for next week, we have had a great this week.  Friday Night Stitches continues to roll, and we have an amazing group of ladies who join us.  I failed to take pictures this weekend as I had put my camera "somewhere safe".  When I found the camera yesterday, I did find pictures from the Friday Night Stitches two weeks ago!!  Sorry for the slight time delay...  These are just too great not to share.

Here is Ms. Bobbie with her soft baby blanket made out of Lorna's Laces Shepherd Worsted.  She backed it with the softest flannel.  This blanket is GORGEOUS!

Look at that great looking stocking?!  Darcy made this out of the first Mason Dixon book.  She also lined this beautifully.

As many of you know, I do live a bit of a double life - healthcare administrator by week/yarn shop owner by weekend....  As such, I would encourage everyone to get a seasonal flu shot unless you are allergic.  I really am a believer that an ounce of prevention is worthy.  In addition, follow some simple steps for keeping healthy:  1.  Cover your cough/sneeze.  Wash your hands with soap and water often.  Avoid touching your eyes, nose and mouth.   Avoid close contact with sick people.

Now that the public service announcemenet is over - I will get back to the fun stuff!  :-)   I love, love, love taking pictures of the cats.  As of late they have really fallen in love with the new Spud and Chloe blanket that I knitted with Outer.  It is essentially Noro's.  This afternoon, Laurel hopped up.  Well, after giving her the "stink eye" for some time and it not making a whisker twitch - he settled down to snug up with her.  Is this cute or what?!  (Also, look at the adorable hat on the bear - one of our customers, Susan, made this cutie out of Comfort and has been good enough to let us share.)

Now back to the planning mines.  I have little gifties for our Yarn Crawl visitors to put together!
